Nooksack River Dike Trail
Enjoy the early days of autumn with a jaunt down the Nooksack River Dike Trail. This mostly flat route offers farmland, wetland and forest views all within a short distance. Rambling along the dike-top trail, you can follow the Nooksack River as it meanders from Hovander Homestead Park to Slater Road and on to Marine Drive if you so choose.

From Ferndale’s Tennant Lake Interpretive Center Parking Lot head south past the gate and onto the River Dike Access Trail. Traveling through expansive open fields, corn is still planted nearby, some of which is left during the winter to provide waterfowl forage. After ˝ mile you’ll hook up with the River Dike Trail proper. No worries of getting lost as you just stick next to the river. The dike protects currently farmed lowlands, now replanted with native, streamside vegetation. With bountiful deciduous trees, you’ll get to see the colors of the season and crunch over fall leaves.

As hunting season is just around the corner, stick only to marked trails and abide by all posted instructions.

Distance: 2+ miles one way
